This picture was shot from a pedestrian walkway over one of Singapore’s many roads. I was after the typical lighting trails that a slow shutter speed creates, but it was only when I experimented with some manual zooming during the 1.3 second exposure that I got something I liked.

Original Raw-file to the left. Post-processing (mainly increasing Fill Light, using the TAT-tool to brighten the colour of the light trails and rotating and cropping to a square aspect ratio) was done in Lightroom. I’m a big fan of square crops (although I’m less happy with losing 33% of my pixels when doing so). It’s time for Nikon to release the D700x or D800 or whatever the new high-res Full Frame Nikon will be called. Or maybe I’ll switch to a Leica M9. Just have to sell my car to finance it. Although I doubt that selling a 12 year old, dented Volvo will cough up enough cash to get me an M9. Might have to rob a bank, which is probably not a good idea to do on foot. So, I’ll hang on to the Volvo, just in case. But, I digress…

I also made a new Export Preset in Lightroom, allowing me to automatically add a small, 3 pixel high white stroke at the bottom of the picture and then a higher grey stroke with a selection of Exif-data. For this, you need the excellent LR2/Mogrify plugin. It’s donationware, but it’s the best 5 or so dollars I’ve ever spent on a plugin. LR2/Mogrify is king when it comes to adding borders, captions and watermarks. You have unprecedented control over where you put everything. You might have to experiment a little (tip: try out your settings on horizontal as wel as vertical pictures) but once you’ve got it to work the way you like, you only have to add it as a preset and you’re all set. Export presets are a great way to speed up your Lightroom Workflow. I use them all the time, for example for exporting pictures for the blog.

By the way, if you’re looking for the keyboard shortcut to add bullets in the LR2/Mogrify text editor: Alt-Shift-period is for the bullet • and Alt-Shift-l (that is l as in lightroom) gives you the pipe symbol |.

P.S. Those are Azerty keyboard shortcuts on a Mac. I don’t know if they’re the same on a Qwerty keyboard. If you find them to be different, please let us know in the comments.

Below, those of you who know Dutch will find the original story (‘Red Wine on the Trans Asya Ekspresi’) – the published version is slightly lower on alcohol . At first I wanted to put up a translation as well, but my English is not good enough to translate the fine nuances. It would be like exporting a 12 megapixel Raw file to a highly compressed and downsampled JPG before printing it at poster-size.

‘Why?’ had de Turkse verkoper niet begrijpend gevraagd. Ik had hem verteld dat we de volgende dag naar Iran zouden reizen. Die toelichting was nodig, want wat hem voordien verbijsterde, was het feit dat ik een regenjas kocht, waarvan ik vroeg om een extra knoop aan de halssluiting te zetten en de mouwen te verlengen. Bovendien was de jas met zijn maat 48 duidelijk enkele maten te groot. Van het elegante model bleef niets over. Maar elegantie was het laatste van mijn zorgen. Dit tenue zou me de komende zes weken in de eerste plaats moeten behoeden voor zweepslagen. De Turkse verkoper keek meewarig.

De historische Trans Asya Ekspresi brengt ons naar het land waar het huis van de moskee staat, waar meer dan 500 jaar voor Chr. het schitterende Persepolis complex gebouwd werd, waar de boeken versierd zijn met miniaturen en de zijden tapijten verhalen vertellen… Iran. De treinrit is een once-in-a-lifetimeervaring. De Trans Asya Ekspresi legt één keer per week 3059 kilometer af tussen Instanbul en Teheran. Wij reizen iets meer dan de helft daarvan mee. Het begint goed, als de charmante trein -weliswaar met 2,5u vertraging- in het Turkse Cappadocië vertrekt. Iraanse medepassagiers glimlachen en loodsen ons naar een leeg slaapcompartiment. We negeren de etensresten van vorige reizigers en genieten van een défilé van donkergroene bergen, gele bloemenvelden, meren en modderkleurige rivieren. Kleine dorpjes in de verte, waarvan de zilveren koepel van de moskee weerkaatst in de namiddagzon. De ritmische cadans van de trein wiegt ons in slaap. Of is het het laatste Turkse pintje?

De volgende ochtend, wanneer ik van een stop in een stationnetje profiteer om koekjes te kopen, maak ik kennis met onze Iraanse buurjongens. We worden prompt –in gebarentaal- uitgenodigd op de thee en de jongemannen bombarderen een leeg compartiment tot theesalon. Bij de thee krijgen we grote, diamanten brokken suiker, gearomatiseerd met sinaasappel. We leggen ze, net als onze gastheren, onder de tong om ze te laten smelten met de hete thee. Terwijl militairen, douaniers, politieagenten en andere geüniformde ego’s in de gangen van het smalle treinstel strijden om de hoogste decibels, delen wij nog een glas rode wijn met de vrienden. Ondertussen rijdt de trein zijn aankomstuur ver voorbij.

‘Why?’ denken wij, net als de Turkse prêt-à-porter verkoper, als we na twee dagen en een ferrytocht geanimeerd door een plaatselijke verkoper van de shoplijn, op een bijna verlaten Iraans perron staan. Ik in mijn Inspector Colombo outfit met een plakkerige sjaal op mijn hoofd en mijn wederhelft met een slaaptekort groter dan zijn enthousiasme. Dan zien we wat verder een veld vol rode klaprozen, krijgen we zoete thee aangeboden van een politiecommissaris en horen we in de verte melancholische muziek. En dan weten we het weer: voor zoveel poëzie en couleur locale heeft een mens al eens wat nachtrust, een dieet van droge koekjes en 48u zonder douche of stromend water veil.

This episode is a high-contrast look on what was a high-contrast travel experience: Iran.

Sometimes (more often than not, actually), I make a picture and when I look at it on the LCD, it seems just fine. But then, at the end of the day, I import it into my computer and when I see it full-size & full-screen, ‘up close and personal’, I get something I have come to call ‘Monitor Shock’: the picture just doesn’t seem to reflect the mood and feel I had attributed to the place in my memory.

In those cases, it’s up to the post-processing not just to objectively ‘correct’ the image for things like overall exposure and white balance, but to subjectively ‘restore’ the look and feel of the original place. After all, unless you’re a purely documentary photographer, you want your photographs to reflect a certain atmosphere, and as much as the focal length used, the aperture and shutterspeed set and the shooting angle and crop employed, the post-processing is an essential, yet often overlooked, part of the equation.

Take this picture of a wall of an abandoned office building in Brussels, for example. It was taken during the Brussels part of Scott Kelby’s Photo Walk. Serge and I had kinda wandered away from the group and all of a sudden we found ourselves in this remote area which felt more like East-Berlin, before the fall of That Other Wall!

The place had a really desolate, gritty feel to it (admittedly helped by some rather unfresh smells hanging about the area) but when I saw the picture later that day on my monitor, I just saw a rather dull – and somewhat distorted – raw file of a graffiti’d wall.

So I delved into Lightrooms Develop module to try and make the picture convey what I had felt when taking it.

• I first corrected the distortions in DxO Optics Pro. This is software that can be called as a Secondary Editor from within Lightroom. The advantage to DxO’s way of treating lens distortions compared to Photoshop’s way of doing things (via Filter – Distort – Lens Correction) is that DxO’s corrections are based on actual measurements of the specific camera and lens combination used. In the mean time, I also adjusted the slight tilt of the wall, resulting in a stronger composition.
• Then, back in Lightroom (DxO automatically exports back into Lightroom), I played around with various presets and tweaked the settings to give the image it’s overall, dark and blue moody feel. I chose a cool tinting (although it was actually very hot that day) because that conveys the desolate feel of the area better.
• I added a couple of graduated filters with a positive clarity to the sidewalk and the street, to make the texture stand out better
• One unwanted side-effect of the post-processing (which involves a very high black clipping setting) was that the diagonal dark line between the wall and the windows had lost every bit of shadow detail (see below, right). I could try to restore detail by painting with a Local Adjustment Brush but because of the rectangular nature of the area (and Lightroom’s lack of something like Photoshop’s Polygonal Lasso tool) I thought I would be quicker off in Photoshop. So I made a virtual copy of the image, and brigthened it considerably to get detail back into the area (below, left). Then I selected the two images in the filmstrip and chose ‘Edit – Open as Layers in Photoshop’. I added a layer mask, allowing me to combine the best of both worlds.

Although I try to keep my edits as much in Lightroom as possible, sometimes it’s just quicker booking a quick return flight Lightroom – Photoshop – Lightroom…

In order to maximize my flexibility, I could even have chosen to open the images as Smart Objects, but this time I saw no reason to.

Below another proof that Brussels is, if anything, a city of contrast: a homeless person has arranged his bed – a cardboard ‘mattress’ is a more exact description – in the entrance hall of the … Ministry of Employment!

PS: the graffiti on the wall of the top picture says: ‘The future, if not black, will be green’. Now there’s something to think about…

Het is alweer een tijdje geleden dat we Istanbul, startpunt van de reis, achter ons gelaten hebben. Ik was erop uit getrokken, statief in de aanslag, om de binnenkant van de moskee te fotograferen. Helaas was die net gesloten voor het gebed. First things first, natuurlijk. Tegen de tijd dat ze weer openging, was ik verondersteld op de ferry naar Yalova te zitten. Daar gingen mijn interieurarchitectuur-fotografie ambities.

De blauwe moskee is al miljoenen keren gefotografeerd. Toerbussen stoppen voor de ingang en moegewiegde toeristen (‘If it’s Tuesday, it must be Istanbul’) doen zelfs niet meer de moeite om uit te stappen. Het gordijntje wordt even opzij geschoven. Vanuit de comfortabele busfauteuil volgt een druk op de knop van het volledig zelfstandig denkende fototoestel. Een nieuwe souvenir wordt – inclusief reflecties van de nooduitgangverlichting – rechtstreeks weggeschreven op het SD-kaartje, misschien zelfs zonder langs het eigen geheugen te passeren. SD as in Sweet Dreams. Het kaartje zal bij thuiskomst overgezet worden op een harde schijf van een paar honderd gigabyte en stof vergaren in zijn kerker van bits en bytes, tot volgend jaar een nieuwe lading foto’s aan het belendende jpeg-kerkhof zullen toegevoegd worden. Ik kan het weten: ik heb zelf een digitaal Guantanamo in mijn bureaukasten slingeren.

Omdat een bekering tot Moslim me iets te ver gaat om een foto van het interieur te nemen, zoek ik noodgedwongen en snel – die Ferries naar Yalova wachten niet – een invalshoek om de buitenkant te fotograferen. Ik monteer m’n statief vlak voor een zitbank, aan de zijkant van de moskee. De verkopers van échte souvenirs kijken me meewarig aan. ‘Zou hij de voorkant van de moskee niet weten liggen’?’, vragen ze zich zichtbaar af.

Jawel. Maar daar staat een bus voor.

Alsof één blog nog niet genoeg was, komt er nu nog een tweede bij: PortraitsOfAsia.be.

Ondergetekende is namelijk – al die ‘Ik ga op reis en ik neem mee’-posts moesten toch ergens toe leiden – voor een tijdje op reis vertrokken. Ik ging dus op reis en ik nam mee… Misses MoreThanWords. En ook een hoop fotomateriaal, waarvan u rond half juni de details zal kunnen lezen in aflevering twee van ons reisverslag. Dat verschijnt in het Nederlandse, maar ondermeer via de Vereniging van Belgische Beroepsfotografen ook in België te verkrijgen, tijdschrift ‘De Fotograaf’. Deel 1, over de voorbereiding, verschijnt trouwens half april.

Zoals u uit de header van de nieuwe blog al kunt opmaken, zijn we voor een klein jaartje vertrokken om een jaren oude droom te realiseren: een langdurige (fiets-)reis door Azië maken. En waar konden we beter beginnen dan in Istanbul, waar we een week geleden geland zijn. Om er eergisteren weer te vertrekken, nieuwe, onbekende horizonten tegemoet. Op PortraitsOfAsia.be vindt u beeld- en tekstimpressies van onze reis. We weten waar we vertrokken zijn, maar we weten nog op geen honderd uren (of kilometer) waar we zullen uitkomen.

Wat we wel weten, is dat we - Inshallah – normaliter terugkomen begin januari 2010. Vanaf dan kunt u bij MoreThanWords terug terecht voor nieuwe Lightroom & Photoshop workshops. Of op dit blog, natuurlijk. Want ook hier blijven we op post. Misschien iets minder frequent – hoe vlot kan je internetten in pakweg Iran – maar de bedoeling is dat meer technische foto-achtergronden over de beelden op PortraitsOfAsia.be op het dit oude, vertrouwde blog komen. Omdat u, in fotografie geïnteresseerde lezer, natuurlijk niet alleen het verhaaltje achter de foto wilt, maar ook hoe de foto genomen werd, waar de flitsparaplu stond, en dies meer. U leest het goed: er zit inderdaad een plu in de Ortlieb fietstassen! Nu ik er aan denk: een paraplu in een waterdichte fietstas: van overkill gesproken!

En hierbij zal ik het laten voor vandaag: er moet nog een blogpost voor PortraitsOfAsia.be geschreven worden!
