Just a quick word to say that Photoshop CS5 is now available for trial or for purchase (full & upgrade versions) over at Adobe. Make sure to visite the Adobe store of your country.
You can upgrade from as far back as CS2. Contrary to the Adobe Suites, there is no price difference between upgrading a CS2, CS3 or CS4 version of Photoshop. This is good news for all CS2 or CS3 users that ‘forgot’ to make the upgrade to CS4 .

Depending on the language, the upgrade price starts from about 250 € including VAT in Europe. Make sure you choose the right language, as you can only upgrade the same language.
With new features such as lens corrections, the all new Camera Raw 6.0 plugin (the same raw engine as in Lightroom 3), the vastly improved HDR Pro module and time saving features such as Content Aware Fill and improved selections, to name but a few, I think this is a very fair price for – to paraphrase Carlsberg – probably the best Image Editing software in the world.

I think that for most photographers, the ‘regular’ Photoshop CS5 will do. If you’re also into 3D, video-editing or special applications such as medical imaging, you might need the more expensive CS5 Extended.

Selections. If you love making them, then by all means, this blogpost is not for you. If however you’re like 99% of the photographers who prefer shooting to making selections to optimize their pictures, please read on.

Lightroom already has a nifty  – and often overlooked – little feature that allows you to selectively control the luminance, hue and saturation of the different colours in the HSL Panel. It’s called the TAT or Targeted Adjustment Tool °. You activate it by clicking on the symbol with the two concentric circles (encircled in red in the screenshot above). Once activated, two little arrows appear above and below. The TAT-tool allows you to manipulate certain colours without changing others. You just select in the HSL panel the attribute you want to change (Hue, Saturation or Luminance) and then you click a colour on the image and while keeping the mouse button down, you drag the tool up or down, which will result in the corresponding sliders shifting left or right. It’s great for darkening skies, for example. By the way, the TAT tool is also available for B&W conversions, and is very handy to control the greyscale conversion of different colours (i.e. how light or dark those colours will appear in the greyscale image).The only disadvantage is that it will apply the same effect to all occurences of that colour throughout the picture. So, if your subject happens to be wearing a sky-coloured sweater, you will darken that as well.

Luckily, Lightroom, as of version 2, also offers non-destructive local editing tools: the Graduated Filter and the Local Adjustment Brush. The latter even sports an ‘Auto-Mask’ feature, allowing you to paint masks more quickly. But you still have to paint.

This is where Viveza can help. This plugin by Nik Software uses Nik’s patented U-Point technology to intelligently make masks for you. U-Point Technology reduces the almost scientific procedure of making complex masks (ever done Channel Operations in Photoshop, anyone?) to the user-friendly dragging around of a couple of sliders.

You simply set a Control Point on the area you want to edit, you define the size of the area by dragging a slider, and then control the Brightness, Contrast and Saturation. There are even more advanced  selective colour corrections of the Hues, Reds, Greens, Blues and the Warmth.

When I tried Viveza, I immediately liked it’s intuitiveness and it’s speed. The masks it creates are very smooth, and you really have to go into the extremes before you start to see masking artefacts (but then again, if you would make a manual mask, you would have the same problem). In fact, one of the biggest problems in manual masking is to make the mask smooth and ‘believable’, so the picture doesn’t look ‘doctored’. This is where Viveza really shines.

Needless to say, the plugin quickly found it’s way into my workflow. A quick tip here: Viveza renders out a Tiff file, on which you perform your edits. You can set up this file to be 8 or 16 bit (the latter is advised, of course). Because of this, it’s best to use it at the end of your Lightroom workflow, i.e. you first make all the necessary adjustments in Lightroom (working non-destructively as long as possible) and then use Viveza. (There is even a way to include Viveza in the non-destructive workflow, but for that you’ll have to use the Photoshop version of the plugin, see below.)

However, I do (or should I say ‘did’) have a few remarks with Version 1 of the plugin: I lacked an undo-function, for one. I also would have loved to be able to selectively apply ‘Structure’ (which is Nik’s version of ‘Clarity’).

It seems I was not the only one missing those features because, low and behold, this week Nik released Viveza 2, which boasts a number of improvements while maintaining the simple and user-friendly approach and interface. Unlimited undo’s and localized Structure control are but a few of those new features!

You can download the trial version of Viveza here but be warned: it’s highly addictive and trying will probably mean buying . If you like the U-Point technology, and do a lot of Black & White, you might also be interested in Silver Efex Pro, Nik’s B&W conversion software. Because of the streamlined interface, if you know one plugin, you’ll be quickly up to speed with the other as well. I blogged about Silver Efex Pro a while ago.

You can buy Viveza as a separate plugin, which will work with either Lightroom & Photoshop or Aperture & Photoshop. Viveza 2 is priced at 199.95 €. And while that isn’t exactly cheap, if you’re a demanding amateur or a professional photographer, the software will easily pay itself back by improving your edits and speeding up your workflow. Upgrades from version 1 are 99.95 € including VAT, or free if you purchased Viveza 1 after september 21, 2009.

You can also buy Viveza as part of the full Plugin Suite, which further includes Silver Efex Pro, Dfine (Noise Reduction), Sharpener Pro (Capture and Output Sharpening) and Colour Efex Pro (a collection of 30 Filters). All programs make use of U-Point Technology.

The Suite, and here’s where the licensing gets a little complicated (more complicated than the actual software, at least – is available in two versions: a Lightroom only or Aperture only version, priced at 299 € including VAT and a Lightroom, Photoshop &  Aperture version, priced at 599 € including VAT.

There are two main advantages to having the Photoshop-enabled version of the Suite:

1. When you use the plugin in Phothoshop, you can fine-tune it’s effects even further by using layer masks
2. (IMHO, this is the most important one). You can apply the settings as a smart filter on a Smart Object. This lets you re-edit your edits in Photoshop in case you should need to. This is something I regularly do, mainly if the edit is not for me but for a client, and if he might want me to change something. Whenever I think that re-edits might be necessary, I use the Photoshop version of the plugin: I simply choose ‘Edit as Smart Object’ from within Lightroom, which opens my Raw File as a Smart Object in Photoshop and then apply Viveza from within Photoshop. The fact that it’s a Smart Object even allows me not only to change Viveza’s settings, but also to double-click on the Smart Object and open up Camera Raw (and change my raw development). Talk about unlimited undoability!

There’s still one thing I would very much love to see in the Photoshop version of the plugin, and that’s the ability to export the masks the plugin creates to Photoshop. Maybe an idea for Viveza 3?

° There’s even a TAT-tool in the curves panel as well, but since this works on global RGB Luminance values, the control it offers is more limited.

Sometimes (more often than not, actually), I make a picture and when I look at it on the LCD, it seems just fine. But then, at the end of the day, I import it into my computer and when I see it full-size & full-screen, ‘up close and personal’, I get something I have come to call ‘Monitor Shock’: the picture just doesn’t seem to reflect the mood and feel I had attributed to the place in my memory.

In those cases, it’s up to the post-processing not just to objectively ‘correct’ the image for things like overall exposure and white balance, but to subjectively ‘restore’ the look and feel of the original place. After all, unless you’re a purely documentary photographer, you want your photographs to reflect a certain atmosphere, and as much as the focal length used, the aperture and shutterspeed set and the shooting angle and crop employed, the post-processing is an essential, yet often overlooked, part of the equation.

Take this picture of a wall of an abandoned office building in Brussels, for example. It was taken during the Brussels part of Scott Kelby’s Photo Walk. Serge and I had kinda wandered away from the group and all of a sudden we found ourselves in this remote area which felt more like East-Berlin, before the fall of That Other Wall!

The place had a really desolate, gritty feel to it (admittedly helped by some rather unfresh smells hanging about the area) but when I saw the picture later that day on my monitor, I just saw a rather dull – and somewhat distorted – raw file of a graffiti’d wall.

So I delved into Lightrooms Develop module to try and make the picture convey what I had felt when taking it.

• I first corrected the distortions in DxO Optics Pro. This is software that can be called as a Secondary Editor from within Lightroom. The advantage to DxO’s way of treating lens distortions compared to Photoshop’s way of doing things (via Filter – Distort – Lens Correction) is that DxO’s corrections are based on actual measurements of the specific camera and lens combination used. In the mean time, I also adjusted the slight tilt of the wall, resulting in a stronger composition.
• Then, back in Lightroom (DxO automatically exports back into Lightroom), I played around with various presets and tweaked the settings to give the image it’s overall, dark and blue moody feel. I chose a cool tinting (although it was actually very hot that day) because that conveys the desolate feel of the area better.
• I added a couple of graduated filters with a positive clarity to the sidewalk and the street, to make the texture stand out better
• One unwanted side-effect of the post-processing (which involves a very high black clipping setting) was that the diagonal dark line between the wall and the windows had lost every bit of shadow detail (see below, right). I could try to restore detail by painting with a Local Adjustment Brush but because of the rectangular nature of the area (and Lightroom’s lack of something like Photoshop’s Polygonal Lasso tool) I thought I would be quicker off in Photoshop. So I made a virtual copy of the image, and brigthened it considerably to get detail back into the area (below, left). Then I selected the two images in the filmstrip and chose ‘Edit – Open as Layers in Photoshop’. I added a layer mask, allowing me to combine the best of both worlds.

Although I try to keep my edits as much in Lightroom as possible, sometimes it’s just quicker booking a quick return flight Lightroom – Photoshop – Lightroom…

In order to maximize my flexibility, I could even have chosen to open the images as Smart Objects, but this time I saw no reason to.

Below another proof that Brussels is, if anything, a city of contrast: a homeless person has arranged his bed – a cardboard ‘mattress’ is a more exact description – in the entrance hall of the … Ministry of Employment!

PS: the graffiti on the wall of the top picture says: ‘The future, if not black, will be green’. Now there’s something to think about…

2) De Lightroom-vraag van de week: omdat (zoals gisteren nog maar eens is gebleken) er op een workshop altijd meer vragen zijn dan tijd , zal ik voortaan elke week iets uitgebreider ingaan op een Lightroom-vraag van een lezer van dit/deze (schrappen wat niet past) blog. Ik ga er daarbij vooral naar streven om vragen te beantwoorden die voor een groot aantal lezers interessant kunnen zijn. U kunt uw vragen kwijt in de comments bij deze post of – mocht u om een of andere reden anoniem willen blijven (u werkt met een illegale Lightroom-licentie, u hebt uw Apple-vrienden wijsgemaakt dat u nog steeds met Aperture werkt, u denkt dat Lightroom een ingrediënt is om lichte chocolademousse mee te maken, …) dan kunt u uw vragen ook mailen naar info(@)morethanwords.be.

Probeer uw vragen zo gericht mogelijk te stellen. Een vraag als ‘Hoe zit de Lightroom workflow precies in elkaar’ is, ondanks het woord ‘precies’ in de vraag, geen gerichte vraag .

Ik kijk er alvast naar uit!

Hierboven zien jullie het originele beeld. Over de setup kunnen we kort zijn: dit is available light gefotografeerd. Ik vond het tafereel, met het geelgroene licht in het kamertje, goed zoals het was. Een flits zou de boel hier om zeep geholpen hebben. Dit is gefotografeerd met de 24-70 f2.8 op f5.6. Ik wilde immers toch een beetje scherpte in de voorgrond krijgen. Omdat er maar weinig licht was, verhoogde ik de ISO naar 1.600, een waarde waar de D700 absoluut geen problemen mee heeft. Wat zeg ik? The D700 eats 1.600 ISO photos for breakfast .

Die ISO-waarde liet een sluitertijd van 1/20 seconde toe, wat net genoeg is om een scherpe foto te bekomen. Er is trouwens een oude vuistregel die zegt dat je sluitertijd – als je uit de hand fotografeert – best hoger is dan 1 gedeeld door de brandpuntsafstand van de lens die je gebruikt: concreet: fotografeer je iets met een 300 millimeter lens (of met een 28-300 millimeter ingezoomd op 300 millimeter), dan blijf je best onder de 1/300 seconde. Fotografeer je iets met een 24 millimeter lens, zoals dit tafereel, blijf dan onder de 1/24 seconde. Die vuistregel dateert overigens van voor de introductie van VR lenzen: dankzij de beeldstabilisatietechnologie kan je met een 300 millimeter zelfs op 1/60 seconde nog scherpe beelden maken!

Over naar de post-processing: deze werd voor een keertje beperkt gehouden. Wat me het meest stoorde was de tonvormige vertekening, die vooral merkbaar is in de blauwe raamkozijnen links en de bakstenen muur rechts.

Je kan dit oplossen via Filter => Distort => Lens Correction in Photoshop, maar dat is een manuele correctie. Bovendien riskeer je soms nieuwe problemen te creëren als je bestaande vertekeningen corrigeert. Ik verkies dergelijke klusjes uit te besteden aan DxO Optics Pro, dat ook als plugin in Lightroom functioneert. DxO maakt dan een Tiff bestand aan, en corrigeert automatisch, op basis van de brandpuntsafstand en de camera-lensgegevens die het in de EXIF-info van de foto aantreft, de vertekeningen. Rechte lijnen worden terug recht op die manier. Het feit dat er een Tiff aangemaakt wordt (zij het dan een 16 bit Tiff, als je dat wil) maakt wel dat je niet meer echt in Raw bezig bent. Om die reden  (en omdat het proces wel eventjes duurt, en een 16 bit TIFF een pak meer schijfruimte verbruikt dan een Raw-bestand) gebruik ik DxO niet systematisch op al mijn foto’s; enkel op degene waar de vertekening storend is. Meer info op deze blog over DxO vind je hier. Hou er rekening mee dat je, om DxO volledig te kunnen gebruiken, je je Raw-files niet mag omzetten naar DNG.

De foto werd na bewerking in DxO netjes terug naar Lightroom geëxporteerd, zodat ik ‘m verder kon afwerken.

Rechts heb ik met een geel gekleurd Graduated Filter de kleur van de muur wat warmer gemaakt, zodat hij beter past bij de andere kleuren. Links schilderde ik met een Local Adjustment Brush met positieve Clarity over het matglas, om de textuur ervan wat beter te laten uitkomen. Tenslotte werd er een zwarte matte met een fijn gekleurd streepje (gesampled uit de kleuren van de foto)  aan toegevoegd. Iets wat normaliter eenvoudig kan via de LR/Mogrify plugin van Timothy Armes, maar aangezien deze niet op mijn laptop staat, heb ik er een ommetje naar Photoshop voor gemaakt.

Wie naast dit blog ook www.portraitsofasia.be volgt, weet dat we ondertussen ergens in Turkije aan het fietsen zijn. We maakten er onderstaand portret. Het verhaal erachter vindt u op de zustersite. Hieronder wat meer technische ‘nuts & bolts’ over hoe het totstand gekomen is.

1) belichting

Pretty straightforward, eigenlijk, en een truc die ik vaak toepas: de omgevingsbelichting (‘ambient light’) ongeveer anderhalve à twee stops onderbelichten. Een SB-900 Speedlight, komende van links van het ‘model’, is ingezoomd op 200 mm en staat ingesteld op ongeveer + 1 stop (als je bij Nikon de ambient onderbelicht, wordt de flitsbelichting navenant mee onderbelicht. Als dat niet de bedoeling is (meestal niet), dan moet je dus de flitsbelichting weer overcompenseren). Canon’s e-TTL systeem werkt anders: als je de ambient belichting onderbelicht, heeft dat geen gevolgen voor de e-TTL flitsbelichting.

Normaliter zou ik in zo’n situatie een paar testshots maken, en zou ik in dit geval de ambient nog meer onderbelicht hebben, zodat het effect van de flits ‘dramatischer’ was. Maar, de attention span van deze kids is maar een paar nanoseconden, dus werkte ik de foto die ik in mijn hoofd had, verder af in Lightroom.

2) post-processing

Op zich ook al een belevenis: thuis heb ik een 24 inch iMac met grafisch tablet, massa’s Ram en een gecalibreerd scherm. Op reis moet ik het met een totaal underpowerde Vaio notebook stellen. Het ding weegt echter maar 1,2 kilo en is kleiner dan een A4-tje, en dus vergeef ik het veel tekortkomingen. Lightroom is echt wel limite op dit toestelletje.

Ik gebruikte een van m’n favoriete presets om wat meer contrast in de foto te krijgen en de kleuren een wat cross-processed feel te geven. Over naar Photoshop, waar ik de resolutie verminderde naar 600 pixels (Photoshop op deze laptop is nog trager dan Lightroom). De saturatie van de muur werd opgetrokken, en de hele muur werd ook donkerder gemaakt. Het lichte stuk links leidt teveel van de aandacht af, en werd daarom weggecropt. Het blauw van het jasje werd sterker en verzadigder gemaakt, zodat het mooi contrasteert met de kleur van de muur. De ogen van de jongen werden lichtjes opgehelderd. Een handgeschilderde vignette maakt het geheel af.

Lezers van dit blog weten dat Lightroom mijn primaire Raw-converter is en blijft. Maar af en toe maak ik gebruik van DxO Optics Pro. Dit pakket omvat zowel een standalone Raw Converter als een plugin voor Lightroom, en heeft een gans eigen kijk op raw-conversie.

Het maakt immers gebruik van camera-lens-specifieke modules. Een volledige uitleg vind je in deze blogpost. De korting die daar besproken wordt is uiteraard vervallen, maar wie voor einde van deze maand toehapt, krijgt met korting code RAFJQEQBL toch nog een mooie 15% korting.

Ik gebruik het programma vooral om lensvertekening bij architectuurfoto’s te corrigeren (het gaat een pak sneller én nauwkeuriger dan Photoshops Lens Correction) en om foto’s te ontwikkelen die met hoge ISO’s genomen werden.

Ze hebben bij Aldi blijkbaar nog wat grafische tabletten over van de vorige keer dat ze er eentje in de aanbieding hadden…

Vanaf morgen te verkrijgen voor nog geen 30 €. Daar kan een mens niet aan gefopt zijn, behalve misschien als je Mac gebruikt. Want er staat expliciet bij dat het Vista Ready is, maar over Mac wordt met geen woord gerept. Opletten dus in dat geval.

Maar Windows gebruikers die op een goedkope manier willen starten met een grafisch tekentablet(je), weten waar naartoe morgen.

Ik heb op mijn Windows jaren tot mijn grote vreugde dit tabletje gebruikt. Ok, het is niet het beste, grootste of laatste modelletje, maar wat fotoretouche betreft is zelfs de eenvoudigste tablet beter dan de meest gesofisticeerde muis. Wij daaraan twijfelt moet maar eens proberen zijn naam te schrijven met een muis. I rest my case! Ook om lokale correcties in Lightroom te schilderen is zo’n tablet een zegen.
