Hi, it’s been a while since I did a video tutorial so here’s another one: it’s about converting a ‘difficult’ image with a very bright sky into a dramatic Black & White with lots of sky detail. Done with my Black & White conversion plugin of choice: Silver Efex Pro. The video also shares some tips on file preparation before you enter the plugin. The folks over at Nik Software have just released Color Efex Pro 4, so I thought it might be a good idea to do a video on some of the new features. I can already tell you that if you’re a Color Efex Pro 3 user, there’s one new feature that’s by itself worth the upgrade price: the ability to stack effects on top of each other! And if you’re new to Color Efex Pro, the video will give you an idea as to what it can do.

Color Efex Pro is one of Nik’s flagship products and is widely used by landscape and portrait photographers worldwide, to enhance their images. There’s an array of 55 filters, ranging from practical and time-saving (such as Dynamic Skin Softener) to creative (such as the new film simulation presets). The video below only shows a couple of effects. For a full list, check out the Nik Website. The video also features some of the advantages of using Color Efex Pro as a Smart Filter in Photoshop.* Tip: make sure to watch the video fullscreen by clicking the fullscreen button in the video player interface (I also had to break the video up in two parts).

* Color Efex Pro can be bought as a separate plugin, in which case it works in Aperture, Lightroom and Photoshop. You can also buy it as part of a bundle, of which there exist three:
The Complete Collection for Lightroom, the Complete Collection for Aperture and the Complete Collection for Lightroom, Aperture and Photoshop. The first two will only work in their respective host program, while the latter works in any of the three programs. While the actual effects are the same and you can therefore create entirely the same image with Color Efex in Lightroom as you can in Aperture or in Photoshop, using Color Efex Pro (or any other Nik filter, for that matter) in Photoshop allows for some extra cool features, such as using it as a Smart Filter. Smart Filters in Photoshop have a lot of advantages, so I thought it would be cool to include some of those in the video as well.

Artikel over Zwartwit in Shoot

Degenen die deze blog al wat langer volgen, weten dat ik een voorliefde heb voor zwartwit. Het was dan ook met veel plezier dat ik voor de Shoot van deze maand een artikel van 8 bladzijden schreef over mijn favoriete digitaal zwartwit. Shoot ligt nu in de krantenwinkel. Je kan hem zo herkennen aan de zwartwit-foto van de knappe Megan, geen onbekende voor wie al eens een workshop volgde. De foto werd geconverteerd naar zwartwit met Silver Efex Pro 2.

Tomorrow, I’ll be doing a webinar demoing the use of Nik Software’s new HDR Efex Pro from a photographer’s standpoint. So, while you might see the occasional ‘over-the-top-gone-to-the-moon-and-back-while-stopping-over-at-Mars’ kind of overly ‘HDR’ed’ image (just to show that it can be done), I’ll mostly demo how I use this software to create realistic images with deep tonality. The type of images that don’t look HDR, but that are impossible or very hard to achieve… without using HDR!

I’ll also demonstrate the advantages of having Control Points inside of an HDR software application.

HDR. Just mentioning it freaks some people out. Few photographic techniques have stirred up such big debates recently as HDR has. I don’t want to go down that road in this blogpost. To me, HDR is a technique like any other. I use it to try to express my vision as a photographer. And like any technique, be it pre- or post-capture, it can be abused. But the same goes for vignetting, shallow depth of field, or… Dutch Angling .

Where do you draw the line? Our cameras have a limited dynamic range, and HDR can help us out with that. If we want to. Just as fill flash can, or using graduated filters at capture. If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you know I’m a big fan of B&W (I should be, as I teach a whole 1 day Masterclass devoted to the subject). I like rich, deep Black & Whites. To that effect, I occasionally like to use HDR techniques in my B&W images. When the folks over at Nik asked me to test their new HDR Efex Pro, I thought I was going to be in for a treat.

After all, when the makers of Viveza & Silver Efex (my B&W plugin of choice) decide to ‘give HDR a go’, you’d better pay attention. And boy, did they get it right. If I were their marketing department, I’d put a tagline ‘HDR, Redefined’ beneath the product logo. Because basically, that’s what it does: it takes all the good stuff that can be done with HDR and throws in all the other good stuff we’re used to from Nik: an intuitive user interface (or at least as intuitive as can be in the world of HDR), control points and, lest we forget, great image quality. HDR Efex Pro offers lots of presets (with a live preview) if you want a fast result, different HDR rendering engines and also lots of control through various sliders.

And, of course, Nik’s patented Control Points are there, too: they allow you to locally control brightness, contrast, structure (i.e. texture) and even the strength of the HDR method used. Yes, you got that right: locally! There is also a single image mode, which I used for the image that accompanies this blogpost. Using control points allowed me to selectively brighten the monastery in the top left corner, thereby creating a better balance between the two religious landmarks that form the ‘skyline’ of Leh, in North-Indian Ladakh. HDR-lovers: you’d better start saving or writing a letter to the HDR Santa !
