About Willem Wernsen…

In a time where every photographer that’s ever carried a camera on the streets, claims to be a ‘street photographer, Dutch Willem Wernsen is a welcome exception. For Willem, the streets and the social tissue in the houses surrounding those streets have been his playground and the people in those streets his photographic subjects. Willem was a true street photographer long before that term became trending on Instagram. He was a street photographer long before Instagram, period. Whether he uses his two-eyed Rolleiflex or his Fujifilm X-T2, he catches the human condition in square black & white frames like few others do. His efforts resulted in three fantastic photo books: Beautiful People and Timeless (both sold out and now only available second hand for more than their original price) and the recent Behind the Great Wall. This new ebook, that Willem wrote with Piet Van den Eynde, is a hybrid book: on one side – literally – the book bundles almost hundred of Willem’s most iconic images. On the other side of the spread, beginning and more advanced street photographers alike will find practical tips and useful insights that Willem gathered over the course of the past forty years.

The ebook’s eight chapters cover the following topics:

‘I’ve read it cover to cover! Don’t let the title mislead you. This isn’t just a book with tips. It goes a whole lot deeper. It’s not only practical, but it also shows what can drive a single person to capture life in images that look a lot like entire stories. It’s very interesting to see how both photographers approach their subjects. And on top of that, it’s also a beautiful photo book. Well done, guys!
— Joost
‘The book is highly recommended. Concise tips and beautiful photographs.’
— Rinko

‘I think it’s a great book. Clearly written and it reads in a fluid, airy way. The ratio between text and images is OK: in addition to being an educational work, it’s also a book full of inspiring photographs and it will cater to photographers of every level.’
— Bert
